How do I convince my mom to let me buy a Swiss Army Knife.?
My birthday is coming up and I am sure I will get money as a present from my family and stuff and I REALLY want a Swiss Army Knife.
Can you please help me convince here?
By the way I am turning 13.
Get instruction on how to safely use a folding knife and knives in general. A folding knife can close on your fingers, even a lock blade can close accidentally and sever your finger, especially if you think it’s a good idea to stab something, in which case if it doesn’t close on the back of your fingers, your hand may slip, and slide down the blade with all your might behind it. Knife safety is taught in Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts or look online for instruction, and let your dad or someone help you. Basically you don’t want to have it in any kind of position where it can slash or stab you or someone else when it slips. And you don’t want to be using a lot of pressure to cut something because that’s when it will slip, and it means the knife is probably dull. So you have to know how to sharpen it. The flat sharpening stones are pretty hard to use without a guide because the angles have to be the same with every stroke. You just always have to be paying attention to what you’re doing. If your mom can be reasonably satisfied that you’re responsible enough and know what you’re doing and she won’t have to take you to the hospital, then maybe you can get one.
With a Swiss Army knife you don’t want to get the huge novelty one like they had on Simpsons. If you’re gonna have one for a survival tool then yeah the magnifying glass for starting a fire and some of the other stuff would be useful, otherwise you might as well go with a pretty basic one that’s not going to make you limp to one side when you walk. The scissors, the flat head and Philips screwdriver, and the can opener are pretty useful if you’re camping or somewhere out of the house. And don’t lose the tweezers, which are good for pulling splinters.
