How do I turn an “english” trained horse into a barrel racer?
I currently own a 21 year old arab mare, but before I got her she was ridden mainly english. I ride both ways, but haven’t tried her western on her yet and i want to barrel race on her. Any tips?
First, have her vetted. I’n not suggesting that 21 is too old for barrel racing, but I would have an older horse checked out first.
Then start her on the basics, just like a person who wants to switch from English to Western. It may take a while to find a Western bit that she is comfortable with, and she may not understand western reining.
Once she has the basics down, you start her on slow bending exercises, get her good and supple, and very gradually work her into slow barrel patterns. Once she has the pattern down, ask for more speed, but gradually.
If you find she just can’t handle it, don’t push her.
So You Think Barrel Racing is Easy? Think Again.
