Choosing The Right Mountain Bike
Mountain biking is a an incredibly popular pastime for most people. Learning to ride a bike is a childhood milestone. And they say once you learn how, you’ll never forget. Most bikes are pretty simple machines, too. They have a pair of wheels and a set of gears to make pedaling less strenuous depending on terrain. Bikes can take people almost anywhere, and even provide great exercise. To get the most from you bike, though, you need the right equipment. If you’re looking at buying mountain bike, you certainly can’t go wrong with Diamondback or Schwinn.
Ignaz Schwinn, born in 1860, founded the Schwinn Bicycle Company in 1895 in Chicago. The company didn’t make much impact in the transportation industry when it began. Automobiles and motorcycles gained much more popularity in the early 20th century. It wasn’t until the stock market crash of the 1920s that bicycles regained some of their lost appeal. When people no longer had the income to maintain the complex automobiles that had just recently entered the market, they turned to more reliable bicycle for transportation. A Schwinn mountain bike wouldn’t be available, however, for decades.
As one of the few American bicycle manufacturers, Schwinn would grow to dominate the field by the 1950s. Trouble hit the company in the 60′s and 70′s, though. Schwinn focused on a general bicycle, but bicycle enthusiasts began to shift to specific types of biking, such as road racing, touring, or mountain biking.
The management also originally denounced BMX racing as a dangerous sport when it gained notoriety, another major misstep on Schwinn’s part. The company would later change its tune, but by then it was too late. Schwinn continued to lose ground throughout the 80′s and 90s until, in 2001, it was finally sold to Pacific Cycles. Through all the company’s turmoil, it took years for a Schwinn mountain bike to come onto the scene. Only recently has Schwinn made name for itself in mountain biking.
Diamondback Bikes, on the other hand, is a relative newcomer to the bicycle scene. Schwinn bikes are comparable, but Diamondback got a leg up by offering a range of sports bikes from the start. Diamondback made a name for itself, but Schwinn would soon reemerge on the scenes with its own mountain biking models. These days, both Schwinn and Diamondback offer bikes catered specifically toward a certain type of biking.
There is one major question to consider when buying mountain bike, though, and it all depends on the terrain. The biggest decision you’ll have to make is hardtail or full suspension. A hardtail bike has the back wheel firmly secured to the frame, adding strong support, but can cause discomfort over rougher trails.
Full suspension solves this problem by attaching the rear wheel to the frame through a suspension device. This setup allows the rear wheel to move more freely, keeping it in contact with the ground more often. With the rear wheel contacting the ground more, the rider has more pedaling power. The suspension also offers much greater comfort over rocky terrain. After that, it’s just a matter of finding the right size for you.
