Bore Sighter

Bore Sighter
Do you have an opinion on bore sighters?

With the price of ammo what it is I’m going to give in and get a bore sighter. I’ don’t mind paying for quality. I need it to handle rimfire, centerfire, etc. (you name it) Any advice? By the way… please check my other question. Thanks.

If you shoot a lot and zero in quite a bit, here is your best method of doing it. In the long run, this will be much cheaper. Get or make a shooting bench. An old picnic table will work fine. Buy a padded gun vise or gun sled to hold your gun in place. Set target at distance you wish to zero- most likely at 100 yards.I use a pie plate taped or tacked on a 4 by 4 sheet of plyboard, in case the first shot misses the pie plate. This is normal if changing scopes. In the center of the pie plate use a black marker to color an area the size of a quarter. Sit down, adjust the gun and vise where the crosshair is in the center of the black dot. Be sure the scope is adjusted to the maximum power, because if you zero on low power any error is magnified when you jack up the power. Shoot the gun. Locate the spot the bullet hit. Go mark it with the black marker if you can’t see the hole with the scope. Then take the gun and vise and put the cross hairs once again in the center of the black dot in the pie plate- then look through the scope and take your cross hairs and move them by using the adjustments to the center of the bullet hole. At his point you have achieved zeroing in your scope with one shot. But take one more shot to convince yourself it is dead on. At times you may have to adjust it an inch or so. But I have never found any method that will beat this one. There is no guessing on how many clicks to move the scope, you can see where it has to be moved to and just do it.Simple, easy, and cheap. A bore sighter will only get you in the ball park and it will still take several shots to fine tune it.And even then, if you are like most people you sometimes will move the cross hairs the wrong way. My method completely eliminates this from occurring. And your only investment may be the gun vise or sled.
