Uncrossing Your Wires
Nealy every home in the civilised world has electricity provided to it. It is something that we take for granted every day of our live and yet it is one of most influential components of our home. So many things rely on it to work, including most of our cooking, lighting and entertainment devices. Put simply, it would be very difficult indeed to live without it and yet it happens to me something most people don’t look after.
When was the last time you took a look at the wiring that runs around your appliances and the electrical web that goes all over your house? Not maintaining your wires properly can cause many people to end up with a mess that can lead to damage or injury.
A central map of your home’s electrical system should ideally be put into diagram format to display where the important cables run and where you can find major switches and transfer boxes. This will prove invaluable when you come around to doing further electrical work or a contractor needs information. It will even help when you want to hang a picture or mount shelves as you can be sure not to hit any important things behind the wall like cable. A stud detector can be used to scan the walls and easily highlight any obstructions.
For exposed cables such as those at the back of computers and entertainment systems, you should use cable ties which work to bind the cables together in an ordered fashion and prevent them getting tangled or providing a health hazard. If you want to identify from which appliance each cable originates you can put a ring of different coloured tape on each and a matching square of the tape on the appliance. These very basic things may take a bit of time to do now but you will claim that back many times over later on and you’ll save yourself money too. They will also save you a lot of stress and headaches.
