Particular items are necessary when a family camps. Things essential at a campground are the same as those used at home. The basics are food, water, shelter, clothing, fire, and light. Campers need shelter as protection from the environment. Tents are essential for shelter at camp, unless sleeping on the ground. Based on how many people and how much equipment is coming along are how tents need to be picked.
A fire is the best friend at camp. It is a good idea to know how to start one, but if not campers should come equipped with proper fire starting materials. This fire will keep the campground warm and allow for foods to be cooked. Fire also provides light, but flashlights and lamps need to be included.
As for clothing, ensure all bases are covered. Long pants, shorts, hats for warmth and hats for sun protection should be brought. Long sleeve shirts and tanks along with hiking boots are needed as well. If there is a lake or creek nearby and people will be swimming, bathing suits should be included as part of the clothing selection.
Sunscreen and bug repellent are essential. Clothing should be sprayed with repellent, in addition to bare skin. If wearing long pants, it is recommended that they are duct taped in boots to prevent tick bites, not to mention a loose snake or two may be around.
For those that have only imagined what it’s like to camp, food is often thought of in terms of chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows. Though this food is enjoyable, it does no good without the proper meal in which to balance. A cooler can come packed with excellent selections such as drinks, breads, raisins, cheese, and cold cuts. Needed protein can be supplied with canned beans chili, soup, and canned meats. Though not essential, freeze dried foods come in handy on a camping trip. Make camp food fascinating and imaginative.
The Swiss Army knife proves its handiness with chopping, while its scissors can be used to cut open packages. A Swiss Army knife will include a can opener which can be used to open canned foods packed with the additional provisions. It can gut any fish that have been caught while camping.
