Carry Handle

Carry Handle
Mail my pistol slide/barrel and carry the handle on an airplane?

I’m trying to transport my pistol home. Can I strip it down and mail the slide/barrel (legal) and just carry the handle back on an airplane with me.
Maybe check the handle in as luggage.

Im guessing I have to throw away my ammo…

- This was an artical sent to me that might be helpful.

I have traveled recently internationally and around the USA by plane to go hunting. And because
many of you may also be planning on flying to go hunting, attend a shooting competition or may
have another reason to have a firearm with you, I thought I would review the process.

It’s really not that bad, you simply have to follow the regulations. AND because this is NOT legal
advice, and the rules can change, it is always a good idea to check on the latest rules, laws and
regulations, Before attempting to fly.
Here is what I would do:

1) Go inside to check your luggage at the counter. Never check in at the curb, unless you declare
your firearm. Most likely they will direct you inside. After showing I.D., tickets, etc., make a verbal
declaration of an UNLOADED firearm which simply means that you tell the ticket agent that you are
transporting an unloaded gun in your luggage. Make sure that they understand and respond.

2) They will make you show them the unloaded gun. (This always makes me nervous as heck, but I
am getting use to it. I wish they had a private area to show the weapon but they don’t) I try and be
discreet, putting my luggage on the scale between the counters, which blocks the view from each side
and I position my body to block the view from behind.

3) At this point I must tell you that you must have the firearm in a locked container which can either
a hard gun case or a locked case inside of a regular suit case. The suitcase MUST NOT be soft sided.
(I ran into a big hassle over that one once!) I personally use the same handgun case as the FBI,
and most of the other alphabet soup named agencies, the Franzen Pistol Case. Made from a special
hardened Kevlar it has both a key lock & a combo lock. It also has a light built into the handle so
you can see the combo at night.

Using a law enforcement quality case, I think, projects the right message. Many other brands of
cases are also fine, as long as they can be locked.

4) The gun MUST BE UNLOADED. No Ammo in the same case.

I always put the ammo and the Magazines in another suitcase. The Ammo in most all cases needs to
be in factory boxes. I also lock the slide open or disassemble the firearm. With my hunting rifle I
remove the bolt and have a special cut-out in foam inside the Pelican Hardcase just for it. Taking the
slide off of a pistol can also be a good idea. It’s also less appealing to steal a firearm that doesn’t
look complete.

5) Ammo should be in a case or complete boxes. I like the Federal Hydro shock 20 round plastic
boxes. Some airlines do limit the amount (quantity) of ammo you can put in your luggage.

6) After they inspect the firearm (I just roll the gun so that they can see it is empty, no magazine,
slide locked back, empty chamber, keeping the gun in the case basically out of sight). You must
then sign the Unloaded Firearms Declaration, which is placed, inside your lockable case.

7) Lock the gun in its case. And if it is a handgun size case, then put it inside the hard suitcase. They
will in most cases require you to keep the suit case unlocked for inspection.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to cable the gun case to the inside of the suitcase to keep it from being
dropped out or easily removed. I also use a ratty looking hard case that has literally been around
the world a couple of times. It doesn’t look worth stealing.

8) Always update yourself on the rules as they are subject to change.

9) When you have finally got your luggage checked, stop, take a deep breath and check ALL of your
pockets, and then check them again, for live ammo, mags, etc. It’s easy to forget and that’s trouble
you just don’t need…

In addition to hunting, why do I carry a firearm with me on some of my trips?

“Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve Order in the world as
well as property . . . Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them.”
- Thomas Paine, Thoughts on Defensive War (1775).
