Ground Driving Harness?
I recently bought a TN Walker and the trainer i got him from used a ground driving harness, it was almost im place of lunging him. she stood in the middle of the round pen and she said it helped him flex and bend? Where can i find one? and is it the same as a regular harnis for a cart?
You can use either. If you have a harness that is the type with a surcingle band for a single horse carriage, you can take it apart and use just the surcingle, martingale, bridle and long lines. This will help set his head. Don’t use the rest of the harness when ground driving it will only get in the way and flap around on him. Remove any overhead check, and remove the breeching, you can leave on the croupper or take it off.
So basically you would use a very stripped down harness.
If you don’t already own and are not planning on getting a harness and cart, you can just buy a lounging – driving harness from a tack catalog or store like state line tack, it would be cheaper as you could get a synthetic or nylon one.
When you drive him you will stand to the outside, not directly behind him, so your position will be somewhere between where you would be lounging him and where you would stand if he where with a cart.
