Has anyone ever seen the sky flash green like lightning and hear a bang after?
At about 5:30 AM i happened to be looking out the window and it was still dark out and a mixture of snow and freezing rain was falling. The sky flashed like it does during a lightning storm but it was a bright green color and it lasted for only about a second and i heard a bang afterwards. I looked this up online and all i found was something about the green flash after sunset but this was before sunrise and it was the entire sky turning green. I just wondered if anyone has ever seen anything like this before because it was so strange.
Yes, I have seen both a few times.
What you saw was either thunder-snow or an electrical arc as a fusible link in the power grid blew. The both are most frequent during thunder-snow events.
The morning and evening green flash (or sometimes called emerald flash) occurs in a super clean atmosphere (tropical islands in the Pacific are where that is most frequently observed) and is less frequently seen. I have never seen this at land stations.
If you have ever seen the sunrise/sunset green flash, you would not mistake it for the thunder-snow green flash. They are different.
