Fruit flies can infest your home anytime of the year but they usually come more often during harvest when there are lots of fruits and vegetables. They usually breed on rotten fruits so make sure to throw out any fruit that has been there for too long. If you have a lot of fruit then it is better keep it refrigerated than leave it on your table or kitchen counter top.
How to kill fruit flies? There are many fruit flies traps that you can make to get rid of this annoying insect but before that should get rid of their breeding place. Female fruit flies breed a lot of eggs. Eliminating the fruit flies without eliminating their food source and breeding place doesn’t completely solve the problem.
Eliminating Breeding Areas
Make sure to eliminate their breeding areas. Their food supply is also their breeding area. If you get rid of their breeding place then you get rid of their food supply too. Make sure to clean up every area in your house. Look for any spills and messes in your cabinet (inside, under and top), floor, table ad kitchen top. Make sure everything is clean and dry.
Throw away all spoiled food and make sure your trash can is covered tightly. Don’t leave any unclean, wet rags, mops or dish rags hanging around. Cover your windows and doors with a screen to prevent fruit flies entering from outside. After cleaning up everything, you are now ready to kill those fruit flies flying around.
A Funnel Trap
Get a sheet of paper, make a cone and apply tape on the outside so that the cone stays in place. Make sure that it fits a cup or a glass. Cut the tip of the cone so that now you have a funnel. Pour cedar vinegar into the glass or cup and insert the funnel in to the glass or cup, but don’t let the tip of the funnel touch the liquid inside. Tape the funnel so that there is no gap between the glass and the cone.
Place this glass or cup in the area where you find a lot of fruit flies. The flies will be attracted to the smell and fly into the cone. The flies will be trapped down or drown into the vinegar. Leave it overnight and you will be amazed at the number of fruit flies that are trapped there.
