Why do you have to wear a gown, goggles, and mask to insert NG tube?
Gloves, yes but why are the other things worn? Is the person really going to splash you with their nose secretions?
Not true at all. Contact with saliva would be standard precautions gown, goggles, mask
NOT gown, goggles, mask
It is not necessary to wear a gown and goggles while inserting an NG tube unless the patient has an infection that can be transmitted through either contact with saliva, or contaminated surfaces (surfaces touched by the patient). Mask are only necessary if the patient has an airborne infection (infections transmitted through the air), or to protect patients who have severely compromised immune systems. In normal cases, gloves and handwashing before and after the procedure are all that is required.
