Happy mouth loose ring w/ roller vs. eggbutt with french link?
I’ve narrowed down my choices for a new bit to these two, which would you recommend? I wanted a gentle bit that will encourage acceptance, but I’m hearing mixed reviews on the happy mouth.
Happy mouths are good bits and great for sensitive mouths. Though, if you have a horse who chews on his bit a lot then the happy mouth isn’t the best choice as they get broken down quite quickly.
Personally, any bit with a french link (double jointed) will win my vote. They are by far the most gentle bit as they don’t jab the horse in the top of the mouth. As with any bit, proper fitting is essential so you don’t get pinching or rubbing. I haven’t met a single horse yet who doesn’t like a french link snaffle of some sort. I, personally, use a loose ring french link with copper inlays. Both of my horses love it!
My vote is for the eggbutt with the fench link… I think they encourage more acceptance. And, without the roller you have less “tinkering” with the bit.
