how do i fit an aheadset instead of an old threaded headset?
i assume all i need is a crown race facing tool, appropriate forks and stem and the rest will fall into place…. has anyone got any ideas?
I did this to my Panasonic. Just buy the right size threadless sized headset. I’m guessing you will need a 1″ size. Then push the cups in as far as you can by hand – just so that they won’t fall out. You won’t get very far. Take a long bolt, long enough to fit through your headtube. Place a washer at the top and bottom of the bolt. Put a nut at the bottom. Now tighten the nut so that the washers will press the cups into the headtube. Simple and effective. You may squash the washers but who cares? They cost a nickel each. Way cheaper than a press. If you can find a cheap crown race setter then get it. Otherwise, go to your local bike shop and pay them $10 to pound the crown race into the fork. Most shops will actually do it for free but some are stingy. Don’t use any old pipe to do this. Don’t forget to install the star nut. Use plenty of grease and gently pound it in. Assuming that everything is of the right diameter, then yes, it will all fit together. Just be aware than Japanese 1″ and European 1″ are slightly different. If you experience a seemingly loose headset, just shim it up. Tighten it back together, and you’re golden. Good luck!
