Gun cleaning with gasoline?
I was cleaning my shotgun the other day and realized that Hoppes 9 solvent is pretty much just kerosene. I figured gasoline was pretty close to that so i tried that out and it seemed to work just as well at getting gunpowder residue and stuff off of mechanical parts. Will this cause a problem? I don’t plan on using gas to clean the bore, but it’s just so much cheaper than Hoppes that I couldn’t resist trying it on everything else. I know it’s not hunting but I figured yall would know best.
I still will use Hoppes oil and the guns will have a few days to air out. It’s not like soak in gasoline and go to the range.
A small correction here, hoppes number 9 has virtually nothing in common with kerosene, it’s closest relative is benzene.
Gasoline, diesel, naptha, kerosene have been used for decades for cleaning metal parts. I’ve used diesel as a soak for bolts and trigger groups, it normally won’t harm the metal. Just make sure you have cleaned ALL residue before firing. Even minimal vapors can ignite.
