putting up sheet rock over existing horse-hair and plaster walls?
i want to redo my bathroom in a 110 yr.old house. The plaster is cracked in the joints etc… so I thought I could just put sheet rock over the walls and ceiling, however, how do I find the studs when I have lath? Also what do I use , screws to put it up or do I need to put strips of wood or something down first to anchor it?
YES! you can certainly do this. But by all means you will need to find the studs. Old Lathe is very questionable when it comes to strength. I would also strongly suggest screws over nails as the old plaster won’t tolerate as much hammering as you will need to do.
And by all means get a stud finder if you don’t have one. Back in those days ‘on center’ had very little meaning as art of lathe really didn’t care exactly where the studs where. A close approximation was just fine back then.
