Is 18 years old too late too start single seater racing without go kart racing ?
That’s the age Damon Hill started car racing (having done motorbikes first), James Hunt only started racing at about the same age too; however they are very much the exception, not the rule. Of the current lot, Sutil didn’t start racing at all until he was 14 – many drivers are multiple karting champions by that age.
It’s certainly not too late if you have the money to finance yourself for a year or two of Formula Ford, and if you have realistic expectations and set yourself targets as to what represents success and failure so you know whether to keep on paying out or not.
