The Benefits Of Walleye
Fishing for walleye at night can be very exciting and frustrating at the same time.
I was able to fish all over a bunch of lakes on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes and I caught a lot of fish during the daytime, but one night, I headed over to a point that had fish all over the place in deeper water. I decided to come back to this spot half an hour before nightfall arrived. There were plenty of fish in the depths of 16 to 20 feet of water, but none on the graph in the 8 to 12 feet of water than I planned to fish. After casting the deeper water for 15 to 20 minutes with no results, I decided to cast a crankbait in the shallow area over and over. I must have cast to the exact same spot 40 to 50 times in a row without getting a bite, but I wanted to give this spot a fair chance and I had a feeling that these fish would move shallow to feed as soon as it became dark. All of a sudden, after making a cast to the same exact spot, I felt a strike. I set the hook and caught an 18 inch walleye. The interesting thing is that I caught this fish as soon as it got dark. After another 15 to 20 casts in the same exact spot, I caught 6 nice walleye between 15 and 20 inches on a crankbait. I lost 3 or 4 as well in this time frame and then all of a sudden the bite just stopped.
Your Fishing Technique Will Choose Your Rod
Walleye fisherman that try multiple fishing techniques every fishing trip will carry multiple type of fishing rods, that are set up for either walleye lures, walleye jigs or walleye live bait.
Please Review our fishing rod selections below.
When you are selecting fishing tackle specifically a rod to be used for fishing for walleye for the purpose of casting and trolling lures and live bait rigs in the 1/4 to 5/8 once range, make sure you pick a 5 1/2 – to – 6ft medium power, fast action spinning rod.
If you intend to purchase walleye fishing rods to cast and troll large deep diving walleye crank baits and live bait rigs more than 1/2 once in size than I suggest a 5 1/2- to 6ft, medium power, fast action bait casting walleye rod. This rod is much better for trolling than a spinning rod because of it’s stiffness. You may want to look at rods that are equipped with a line counter if you are going to be using it primarily for trolling.
