Pad under saddle blanket?
I just bought a Mayatex wool blanket to go under my western pleasure saddle. Do I need to buy some sort of underpad to go under the wool blanket? I was looking at a gel underpad that is sized slightly smaller than the blanket…..would it be too bulky? The gel pad is about 1″ thick. I don’t want to cause discomfort to my horse’s back. Thanks.
I always put an underpad on my western pleasure horses to help keep my expensive mohair pads clean and sweat free. I prefer the felt ones, but I have heard good things about the gel ones. You cannot pad your horse enough to cause discomfort unless you wrinkle up the blanket. We also team rope and use thick underpads and heavy pro choice pads on top.
