When replacing the trebles on Mepps Aglia spinners for single hooks, what type of hook is the best type to use?
Also what size single hook would be the best suited for a Mepps Aglia spinner?
I have had a look on the Mepps.com website and the hooks on the single hook version of the Mepps Aglia’s do look quite large, I was thinking of using an Aberdeen hook in possibly a size 3/0 or 4/0 to compensate for the loss of the treble, however your thoughts and opinions on this subject would be much appreciated.
The Wormist: I do use them to spin for pike and perch, but the spinners themselves are only a size 3 Aglia which I believe are 6.5 grams in weight. The reason why I thought of using the Aberdeen hook was because this is the actual hook that Mepps themselves use on their single hook Spinflex spinners, but I don’t know what size they use as they do not state this on their website.
l would use a siwash hook. like those found on a needlefish lure.
similar to an aberdeen, but a shorter straight shank of a bit heavier wire.
perhaps a size 4. possibly as large as a 2.
but not as large as a 3/0 or 4/0 unless the lure is a size for pike or musky.
but then, an aberdeen is definitely not the hook to use. their light wire will straighten too easily on larger gamefish. even a medium size bass may straighten one. go with a siwash. they are strong enough for pacific salmon and halibut in the larger sizes.
