What is a good fishing rod for Canadian Large Mouth Bass?
I want to get my father a new fishing rod for Christmas because his is really old and doesn’t work well. We go fishing in Ontario, Canada near the U.S. border. We go on a lake and catch mostly large mouth bass and occasionally a pike or a small mouth bass. We usually use live minnows for bait and occasionally spinners or spoons. What is a good fishing rod for this?
I wouldn’t really want to get the cheapest, but a nice rod (In my opinion) for not a lot of cash, is the St. Croix Triumph series. I’m not sure if he prefers Baitcasters or Spinning reels, doesn’t matter, the Triumph series is available in both versions. I’m also not sure if he catches a LOT of Pike, if he does, a medium/heavy action rod will be best. If he only catches them rarely, a medium action will be best.
If you’re also looking for a reel (you didn’t state anything about it), for a baitcaster, I’d go with the Dave Fritts Signature Series reel which Fisher_King has said good things about, or the Daiwa Megaforce. Your best bet would be to get the Shimano Citica, which at $120, is a total STEAL. If he wants a spinning reel, the Pflueger President or the Pflueger President XT would work magnificently.
For line, a 10lb or maybe even 12lb strong mono such as Trilene XT or Stren or even Berkley Big Game will do.
