Penn Senator
Is a Penn Special Senator 113H 4/0 enough to catch a 6-8 foot shark?

I was just wondering because people keep on mentioning 6/0 and 9/0 when shark fishing, all I need is something that can catch a 6-8 foot shark.

Yes, I’ve done it. With 50 pound line on a 113 I’ve brought blue sharks up to 8 feet long (roughly 100 pounds) to the boat; I’ve caught threshers and one mako (about a 5-footer) on 20-30 pound line and smaller reels. (I’ve never targeted sharks; I’ve just hooked them incidentally while fishing for other fish, and generally release them.)

It’s easier with bigger reels (and necessary if you’re going to mess with bigger sharks), but sharks are skinny fish and not that strong (pound for pound) compared to tuna and billfish.
