Farm raised Steelhead Salmon?
In my mind a Steelhead is a Trout that has gone to sea. Fisherman go in the winter and fish for them in rivers.
Now I see often ads in the food-section of the News Paper, that read,
Farm raised Steelhead.
I sure would like to find out what is going on.
I know about farm raised Salmon but a Steelhead does not fit into this category!
Can anyone enlighten me???
Steelhead are ocean-run (anadromous) rainbow trout. That’s not just an opinion, that’s the way it is.
There should be nothing surprising about farm-raised steelhead. These would be farm-raised rainbow trout that are at some point in their life cycle moved to a seawater enclosures. I doubt that the farm-raised steelhead have all the characteristics of wild steelhead, and I doubt I’d ever get talked into buying or eating it, but if they spend a year at sea (or in a sea enclosure) then they’re steelhead.
