Shifter Brake

Shifter Brake
I don’t understand modern new cars. Can you please explain me how their shifter works and where is hand brake?

I have driven old cars most of my life. Currently I have 2006 toyota corolla. It has straight line shifter, that is P, R, N, D, 2, L. Its pretty simple. Just put it on D if driving and on P when parked, and R to reverse. N, 2, L is never used and is ignored. However, modern cars have zigzag shifters and It appears confusing. There is also + and – on the left side. Some cars have many D’s like Honda, 4D, 3D, D, etc etc. And many of these cars have no hand brake levers which is pulled by hand. So where is the hand brake? And where is the overdrive button? For example in the corolla when you put on D, overdrive button must be on. Its very confusing and I cannot find any new car with straight line basic shifter of P, R, N, D, 2, L and hand brake lever.

the straight line shifter of P, R, N, D, 2, L still exists in the 2011 honda cr-v and 2011 honda odyssey. However, they don’t appear to have hand brakes. One car that fits your match would be 2011 volvo s-40. It has a simple straight line shifter or P, R, N, D, L and a hand brake lever. I think that is the best match for you. You can also consider 2011 mazda 6. It has a hand brake lever, as parking brake and even though its shifter is zigzag, the odometer displays if the mode is P, R, N, or D. That makes it easy. I think volvo s-40 would be best match for you.
