Help!!! Beach Cruiser from single speed to 3 or 7 speed?!?
I have a single speed beach cruiser and I want to know if it is possible to convert it to a multi-speed bike to handle the hills in my area. Is this even possible?? If so how much would it cost around and how would I go about doing it??
It depends on how close to standard sizes your bike is!
The width of the frame where the rear axle is fitted should be 130mm, if so then there are hub gears that can be built into your existing wheel.
The cable fittings can be bolted to the frame, although you may need some imagination if your tubes are over sized.
Lastly the gear changing mechanism available to you depends on the handlebar diameter, you may not have the option of a twist grip changer.
The cost will be mostly labour, a three speed Sturmey Archer will be around $100 and probably about the same in labour. good luck and let us know how you get on!
