activities for a super bright 5 year old?
I work in an after school club and we have a little girl who is 5 years old but has abilities (reading, writing, drawing, logic etc) way ahead of her peers, more like a 7 year old!
I am looking for activities etc we can do with her which are fun but challenging (not to classroom level or she’ll get bored!) particularly logical activities where she has to really think about what she has to do first.
We do not have access to a computer in the club but am able to print things at home to take in for her.
Any ideas gratefully received!
One activity I’ve done with this age range, which really gets them thinking and sparks their creativity, involves elephants. Tell her that an elephant has escaped from your local wildlife park and is roaming the streets of the town where you live. Give her a small picture of an elephant (clip art from the internet) and a sheet of A3 paper. Tell her she has to think of a way she is going to get the elephant back to the wildlife park and you are looking for fun and imaginative ideas. She then sticks her elephant where appropriate and draws her idea (as a scene) around it. If you think one idea is too simple, challenge her to find 5 different ways. Each must be clearly drawn and then clearly explained to you or a friend. My favourite idea to date was a radio controlled peanut which you drive in front of the elephant to steer it home! Have fun.
