Survival Emergency

Survival Emergency
My cat is a skinny cat and she is having an emergency spay, what are the likelihoods of survival?

She is skinny but became sick with pyometra. She was severely dehydrated and had a fever of 104. She went undiagnosed for 2-3 days. today she went in for treatment, she is being stabilized tonight for an emergency spay tomorrow. The nurse said she should be fine, since she was in such high spirits. But I would like to hear comments from those petowners who have had this problem. Did your pet survive? Do you have any tips for recovery afterwards. Thanks!!!!!!

We had a cat whose uterus had ruptured, and she continued to try to labor for at least six hours because we didn’t have a clue what was going on. She had an emergency spay, and she did fine.

Her being skinny isn’t necessarily a factor- cats often loose a little weight when they are pregnant because it takes so much food energy to grow kittens. Also, being dehydrated takes a lot of weight off an animal.

104 isn’t nearly as high a temp for cats as it is for people.

Re-hydration shouldn’t be a problem, I’m sure she has an IV and is probably already re-hydrated right now.

If she had an infection- pyometria- I am sure she is getting an antibiotic.

If she feels good enough to be energetic, that’s a good sign.

I would trust the nurse. And at least they didn’t feel like they needed to rush in and do it right away. That would have been much riskier.

Good for you for taking her in, and it’s a lousy way to go about it but I am really glad she’s getting spayed. There are too many unwanted cats and kittens in the world as it is.
