does anyone know any intresting facts about topographic maps?
i have a whole section i need to fill out for science class i made this part up myself hoping to get extra credit.so can anyone help somethings i was trying to fine were who started making the topo maps and what year.
Wow.. you will have to go back a looooong ways. perhaps even to the cave drawings in France which show the hills and valleys involved in a hunting scene. Obviously no year is available there.
If you want to narrow down your search and focus a bit more, go to the online section of the smithsonian and down load some of their better maps there. Lewis and Clarks notes and maps on the way to the west coast, John Fremont as he mapped out what would become California, Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln’s maps are there from before they became known for other things. (Think 4 out of 5 on Mount Rushmore)
Other surveyors of note did maps (Wyatt Earp for example) and those records are there.
or you can move back in time…
Columbus, Americo Vespucci (sp?) and even the Norsemens disputed map of the northeast US which predates any of the Spanish and Italian explorers…
It all depends on where you want to start and what you want to cover… but with a few good exhibits and some background info.. an easy A
