help!
Best way to answer the question is that in the winter when things cool down considerably, the trout’s metabolism slows a great deal. They will not expend a lot of energy to feed. Their natural food at that time of year is a lot smaller than it is in the summer. So, as a result, you would want to use midge patterns in very small sizes such as #22 and #20-18. Using a very light leader tippet like a 1 1/2 lb. Fly fishing is like a combination of fishing and hunting by site. In the winter when the water levels drop very low and the water is extremely clear, it becomes imperative to use small flies and very light tippets. You will need to buy these flies from a fly-tier or a fly tying shop. “Midge” patterns. Exception to this is those brite sunny days when the fish become a little more active when the sun warms the water a few degrees. Still stay small but can get away with size 14 or 16 at these times.
