Weaver Mount

Weaver Mount
What rail mount (weaver) do you guys recommend for the Weatherby Vangaurd?

I have a Weatherby Vanguard synthetic and have found an awsome scope to go with it but it requires a rail mount. I like rail mounts better thatn reg. scope mounts as i have one on my .243.

When you miss the big buck – come back and tell me how much you like rail mounts again.

Rail mounts were designed for quick removal/change of the accessories, easily adjustable to accommodate different sized soldiers, and so a soldier can quickly make accurate changes to an issued rifle.

Rails are seen on rifles used for CQC (close quarters combat) and battle rifles designed for close in and out to 300 yards.

You do not see rails on long distance rifles or hunting/sporting rifles because they are not the strongest mount available. When your target is a human that offers 6 sq feet of area to hit at less than 300 yards – a little slop is no problem.

If you can get them to work well for you – that is fine. However, I think when you become a better marksman or move your target out past 300 yards you are going to find they begin to effect you groups. If you get all the screws seated with red LockTite and use a small torque wrench to set them and all the other mounting hardware – you should be golden. If you haven’t done this – do it – because if you like rails now, you will really love them once the red Locktite is in and everything is torqued properly.

The big reason against rails on a bolt gun – you need to mount the scope as low as possible to the receiver for maxium accuracy. The scope must be as low as possible, but, not interfer with loading and unloading. Rails add an extra piece of metal the goes across the side of the breach – it makes the scope mount higher. It’s hard enough getting just the bottom of the scope to be low, but, having a rail that goes across will just make the scope a heck of allot higher. (having a scope too high makes is very difficult to mentally calculate the drop between unknown distances, and, impossible to figure out this drop and windage).

Have you considered that maybe you haven’t spent time around high quality scope mounts to enjoy them? If you want a high quality scope mount that is a quck release – Leupold makes the best one. I had two Winchester 70′s in heavy varmint barrels – one in 223 and one in 308. By putting the Leupold QD mounts on both rifles I was able to share a $850 Leupold Varix-X III 6-20X scope between the two.

Bring your shooting iron in a well established gunsmith – they have access to all sorts of cool mounts you and I don’t even know exists. Brownells.com and Midwayusa.com are great places to find scope mounts. Midway has the best selection of rail mounts I have seen anywhere so far.

Good Luck.
