Weaver Picatinny

Wild Turkey Sights

There are huge advantages to using non magnifying or very low magnification optical sights in hunting. The sight picture is very fast to pick up and place on the target, even against the clutter of silhoutted branches etc.. You get much better situational awareness with a non magnifying sight which is ultimately like looking down a drinking straw. These sights are ideal for the brush country close range hunting typical of the Eastern and Southern States. These sights have won over the world’s miltaries for close range fighting, but civilian variants are available for hunting which are cheaper than their night vision capable military cousins.

Reflex sight design has come a long way over the last few years. Aimpoint, market leader in red dot sights recently brought out their Micro H-1 red dot sight. This unit, which is parallax free beyond 25 meters has a 4 MoA dot (actually 3.8 MoA) only weighs an incredible 3.7 ounces with a screw operated Picatinny mount. The US Army think enough of this sight’s partner, the NV compatible T-1 to trial it in Afghanistan for potential general issue. This will give you an idea how rugged this sight is. You can carry an H-1 in your pack to keep you shooting should your scope fail, or even mount one on top of the scope with a Pictatinny ring adapter to give you an instant close range back-up to your scope. The Aimpint Micro H-1 is just as at home on shotguns as it is on rifles and even has a following for wildfowling and other wing shooting in Europe. It takes a single CR2032 battery on which it will run continuously for 50,000 hours.

Eotech have won a great reputation for their holographic weapon sights which have won a great reputation for themselves in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and which have been adopted by US SOCOM among others. Eotech have deliberately kept focused on the military and law enforcement markets, but hunters are served by a small range of low cost models suited to their needs. Their hunting models run on the readily available AA battery and are fully brightness adjustable to suit all hunting conditions. One big advantage of this system is that even if only a tiny part of the rear sighting window is visible, you can see the aiming pattern and get your shots on the target. Eotech make the Eotech 512.A65 in three versions, the 512.A65/1 (Black finish), 512.A65MO (Mossy Oak Obsession finish) and 512.A65RT (Real Tree APG HD finish) to suit different hunting environments.

Trijicon furnished the sight for the Army’s Advanced Combat Rifle in the early 90s. The ACR may have come to nothing but ACOG sights went on to take the world’s militaries by storm. The TA44SR-10 is a 1.5X16 sight with a red dot in a circle reticle intended for close quarte battle. There are no electronics to fail on the TA44SR-10, which is illuminated by a combination of daylight via fiber optics and a tritium light source. The TA44, like all ACOGs is designed to fit an M16 carrying  handle, but a short TA-60 adapter will make it fit any Picatinny mount and a Weaver adapter is also available. This sight has the advantage of retaining situational awareness whilst offering a small amount of additional clarity of the target. 1.5X magnification has a military following – for example the standard carry handle sight on the Steyr AUG rifle. This sight weighs only 4.9 ounces and makes a highly effective wild turkey sight.
